Public Health Responsibility Deal Launched (Department of Health)

“The Responsibility Deal shows how partnership and challenge can be an effective way of tackling some public health objectives, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley announced today as he unveiled the more than 170 signatories to the first phase of the deal.

Many organisations including major Supermarkets including ASDA, Co-operative, Morrisons, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose  caterers and restaurateris have signed The key pledges agreed include:

  • calories on menus from September 2011 – significant since meals eaten outside the home contribute 20 to 25% of our daily calories
  • reducing salt in food so people eat 1g less per day by end of 2012 – saving the NHS £46 million per year within 3 years and preventing more than 4,000 premature deaths a year
  • removal of artificial trans fats by end of 2011″
